Distribution: It is widespread in the north temperate and boreal forests of the Northern Hemisphere

Habitat: It sometimes occurs on intact conifer logs, but is most abundant on wood that has been more highly decomposed.

Conservation Status: Not of concern

Edibility: Like most stropharias, it is not recommended as an edible.

Identification Notes:

Stropharia hornemannii is our other common forest-dwelling stropharia. It is similar to S. ambigua in size and general appearance, but differs in having a cinnamon gray to dull brown to purplish brown cap and consistently persisent ring, and in being somewhat stockier and less elegant.
